Preserving Earth's Legacy

Environmental stewardship is a fundamental pillar of our philosophy. We recognize the importance of preserving the natural heritage & biodiversity of the areas we work in.

Sustainable Mining Practices

Environmental stewardship is a fundamental pillar of our philosophy. We value the need of preserving the natural heritage and biodiversity of the areas we work in. Through responsible mining practices, stringent reclamation efforts, and ongoing environmental monitoring, we strive to leave a positive and lasting legacy for future generations.

Mining has an allround impact on land, communities and natural habitats. We want these impacts to be positive and mitigable. We strive to establish a sustainable legacy for future generations through our mining operations, which take into account the social, environmental and economic factors. To make this possible, we have set clear sustainability outcomes and we prefer to work with communities in the regions where we operate to build local skills and infrastructure for long term socio-economic development in our peripheral areas.

We must be proactive in acknowledging and dealing with the significant, enduring shifts in the environment and society that are impacting our operations. This also means listening carefully to stakeholders in and around our mine’s periphery and recognising a trend of their rising expectations. We also need to outline what we need to do now to protect and grow value for all our stakeholders in the near future.

Our Mining policy clearly states the principles that form the core of our sustainable and unique approach to mining. It is designed in a way that helps us build on our focus on land, local relationships and it reinforces our commitment that in the areas where we work, we should have a long-term presence and leave a sustainable legacy. We also play a leading role in the wider movement towards establishing social and environmental standards for mining that our stakeholders recognise and value.

We at M/s. M.G. Mohanty have been complying to the conditions of CSIR-NEERI for environmentally sustainable mining since many years, successfully. The Company has implemented the Sustainable development framework successfully and has achieved a befitting 4 star rating by the IBM as per the provisions of rule 35 of the Mineral Conservation and Development Rules 2017.

Our Mining Practice

M/s M G Mohanty adopts modern method of Mining with highly mechanized system.

The method of Mining adopted is Open cast Mining with Shovel – Dumper combination method. The ore is loosened by deep hole drilling and blasting.

We use highly automatic, environment friendly drill for drilling of deep hole with wet drilling and dust extractor system. The blast geometry is decided basing on the strata condition, hardness of the rock, size of the blasted rock desired etc. by a team of experts. The blasting pattern and
charge factor have been decided and fixed after doing many trial blasts with the help of experts from ISM-IIT, Dhanbad and as per the approved mining plan. Utmost care is taken during every blasting to control fly rock, air back pressure and ground vibration. Our effort is always
towards eco-friendly, safe and economic drilling and blasting.

The Bench & Dump parameters of our mines have been finalized after detailed Slope Study by experts from ISM-IIT, Dhanbad and as per the approved mining plan. The height of the benches are maintained at 10 meter (Maximum) with width equal or more than the height.

The loose ore, up to 500 mm size, thus excavated are transported to feed to the screening unit for processing to obtain desired size and grade. The +40 mm to 500 mm Lumps fraction obtained are fed to the crushing & screening unit for required size reduction and separation.
The +500 mm size boulders are broken to smaller size with the help of Rock breaker and the lumps thus generated are also fed to the crusher to obtain the final product.

  • Loader is used for loading of product to dumper for shifting of different grades of product to different stack yard.
  • Loaders, excavator of bucket capacity 0.9m3 to 2.9m3 are used for excavation and loading.m3
  • Dumpers used are of 25 MT – 35 MT capacity.

Environment Protection

Environmental consultants having adequate knowledge and experience have been engaged for monitoring the environmental parameters alongwith regular environmental reviews. Qualified consultants regularly perform quarterly monitoring of various sampling points to ensure that all environmental factors, such as air, water, noise, and waste, are properly monitored and recorded in both the core and buffer zones. Additionally, monitoring stations have been established for ambient air quality. Samples of drinking water are collected from nearby areas at random intervals to check their potability.

Afforestation

Several major afforestation programmes have been carried out since the existing mines opened in 1986. Large-scale afforestation projects have been implemented in and around the Mines Road, ML area, O.B. dump, lease boundary, and safety zones. The initiative has been expanded to include neighbouring villages, labour colonies, and roadside plantations on both sides. The local forest officials has been involved in the planning process.

Till 2023 March more than 42500 trees have been planted, with the average survival rate being more than 75%. The native species of plants used are Gambhari, Akasia, Karanja, Samara, Kathabadam, Debdaru, Chakhunda, Bamboo, Neem and Mango etc.

Pollution Control

Air Pollution

A dust suppression system has been implemented to minimize dust pollution. This system is successful in managing fugitive dust emissions on a consistent basis. Furthermore, all haulage roads are taken care of with the help of dedicated water tankers, and water sprinklers have been set up at all loading and unloading points. Our drilling operations prioritize environmental friendliness through the use of various measures. Our DTH machines include an integrated water injection system and dust filtration system to limit dust emission during drilling. For short hole drilling, we implement wet drilling methods with wet covers when using jack hammers and rock drills. Our Crushing Plant features a Dry Fog System and Atomized Water Spray to substantially reduce dust generation, and many of our conveyors have a Dust Encapsulation System to minimize dust emission. We also regularly monitor and control vehicular and machinery emissions to ensure they remain within acceptable limits. Internal concrete roads have been made to control dust pollution levels and Electronic display boards have been set up to indicate and ensure that the pollution levels are well within the permissible limits of the SPCB.

Water Pollution

To ensure that minimal water pollution in mining areas and the surrounding regions, a thorough water management plan has been implemented. This includes the construction of proper storm drains, preventing iron ore fines from spilling, and the introduction of a waste management program with recycling. Settling ponds have also been built to trap contamination and sediment from mining operations, and collected water is used for various purposes. Drain maintenance is regularly carried out to ensure their efficiency. Our mining and camp area has implemented an approved rainwater harvesting system to recharge the groundwater level. We’ve taken multiple precautions to prevent the washing-off of overburden, such as developing a large green cover, building retaining walls, installing garland drains, and constructing siltation ponds.

The main utility of the Sewage treatment plant (STP), that is set up, is to eliminate impurities from sewage, resulting in a safe effluent that can be disposed into the environment or repurposed. This is crucial in preventing water pollution caused by the discharge of untreated sewage.

Apart from this, An Effluent Treatment (ETP) plant has been set up by the Firm through which wastewater, oil and lubricants discharged from light & heavy vehicle repair & servicing is treated by the use of multiple methods, before it is safe for reuse or dishcharging to the environment. This process significantly decreases the demand of fresh water while keeping the environment clean.

A wheel washing system has been installed at the exit point of the mines for cleaning the tyres of trucks when they leave the mines site, to control and eliminate the pollution of public roads.
